Artist Statement

Jaime Braz (born 1958, Angola) is a Portuguese artist whose work spans painting and sculpture, deeply rooted in his background as a biology and geology educator . His artistic practice is profoundly influenced by the intricate forms found in nature—particularly microscopic organisms such as rotifers and small insects—which serve as both inspiration and subject matter in his exploration of organic aesthetics and structural complexity.

Having studied sculpture under José Moreira Neves, Braz developed a keen eye for form and texture, often blending scientific observation with artistic interpretation. This duality is evident throughout his body of work, where natural precision meets imaginative abstraction. His sculptures, with their delicate detail and dynamic presence, evoke the hidden architecture of life forms too small to be seen by the naked eye.

In his paintings, this fascination continues through compositions that balance biomorphic elements with expressive, often surreal touches. His acclaimed Space Oddities series—a trio of which was featured in the May 2009 edition of Russian Esquire Magazine—reflects his ongoing dialogue with the unknown, the microscopic, and the cosmic, weaving together a visual language that is both alien and familiar.

Braz has exhibited in Portugal and the Netherlands, contributing to a wider conversation about the intersection of science and art. Through his work, he invites viewers to reconsider the beauty and complexity of the natural world, encouraging a closer, more contemplative look at life’s smallest wonders.
