Ostend: The Artistic Heartbeat of the Belgian Coast
Art has always been the heartbeat of this Belgian coastal city. While it once wore the polish of a seaside resort, Ostend’s modern grit has since produced some of Belgium’s most prominent artists. From the satirical masks of James Ensor to the haunting coastal shadows of Léon Spilliaert, the city’s raw energy continues to fuel a legacy of fearless creativity.

The Unyielding Grip: Francisco Figueiredo Lopes' Make it Burn then Hold
Against the backdrop of Lisbon’s brilliant blue skies and the distant shimmer of the Atlantic, Francisco Figueiredo Lopes’ Make it burn then hold seems almost alive—straining, grasping, resisting. It is a sculpture that speaks in extremes: of creation and destruction, of accumulation and exhaustion, of the raw forces—both human and material—that shape our world. Here, steel becomes a language, tension a narrative, and a monumental form transforms into a meditation on existence itself.

Henrique Netto’s Anatomia dos Emojis: Peeling Back the Digital Face
In a world where we learn emotion from digital screens, not human faces, Henrique Netto’s Anatomia dos Emojis performs a digital autopsy. By exposing the imagined musculature behind our most familiar icons, he envisions a future where the lines between emotion and machine, human and code, start to blur.

Roger Remaut · 2026 Feature Exhibitions
The Remaut.
Collection
Roger Remaut stands as a pillar of contemporary Belgian Abstraction. His works are held in the permanent public collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Ostend, and the Belgian Government.

Into Abstraction
Works from 1982 – 1996
A rare glimpse at some of the earliest works by Roger Remaut. This period marks a decisive move away from figuration toward pure abstraction. These pieces explore form and the physical properties of the material surface, often employing a monochrome or limited palette. Texture and the interplay of structure and contrast dominate the compositions, revealing an artist deeply engaged with the materiality of paint and the expressive possibilities of abstraction.
