Full Institutional Overview
Into Abstraction
Works from 1982 – 1996
A rare glimpse at some of the earliest works by Roger Remaut. This period marks a decisive move away from figuration toward pure abstraction. These pieces explore form and the physical properties of the material surface, often employing a monochrome or limited palette. Texture and the interplay of structure and contrast dominate the compositions, revealing an artist deeply engaged with the materiality of paint and the expressive possibilities of abstraction, leading to institutional acquisitions by the Museum of Fine Arts, Ostend, and the Flemish & Belgian Government Collections.

New Horizons
Works from 1997 – 2000
In 1997, Remaut relocated to Billericay, England, entering a period of heightened international engagement. He became active in the London art scene while exhibiting across the UK and Europe, including Amsterdam and Quimper, and participated in interdisciplinary events such as the Norwich Film & Multimedia Festival. During this time, he experimented with new materials and techniques, expanding his palette and demonstrating an ever-growing mastery of paint and surface, while continuing the conceptual rigor that defines his work.

Form of Figuration
Works from 2000 – 2023
In 2000, Roger returned to Belgium, settling in the Westhoek village of Pollinkhove. With a presence on both the national and international stage, including participation in the International Artist Assemblage in Berlin. It was during this period of heightened global tensions, the Make Art Not War series was born, his work increasingly carrying political undercurrents, treating art as an act of defiance and creation in the face of destruction.

Transcendence
Works from 2023 – Present
In 2023, at 81, Roger Remaut relocated to Portugal. Over five decades, he has honed a mastery of abstract form, exploring the materiality of paint, the interplay of mark and surface, and the tension between control and spontaneity. This lifetime of inquiry is now distilled into intimate canvases, each carrying the weight and energy of a career dedicated to abstraction. Even today, Remaut demonstrates that painting remains a vital, generative force — art created in defiance of destruction and in response to a turbulent world, a testament to the enduring power of artistic expression and imagination.
