Opening: 7 September at 7 PM
Sandra Jane Heard’s latest body of work, Verdant Echoes, reflects on the delicate balance between nature’s vulnerability and resilience. Through ink on paper and sculptural forms, Heard explores themes of destruction, renewal, and the persistent strength of the natural world, even as human activity accelerates its transformation.
This new series marks a reinvention of Heard’s artistic practice, sparked by a period of introspection during global lockdowns. Beginning with the intimate view of her Minneapolis surroundings and expanding to the monumental landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, her work captures the life, decay, and regeneration of ancient trees. These forms become conduits for memory, emotion, and imagination, bridging the physical and the ephemeral.
Her process—observing nature, hiking through rugged landscapes, and distilling experiences into ink and paper—culminates in sculptures crafted from natural materials, reflecting the cycle of life and creative rebirth. Verdant Echoes invites viewers to consider the beauty of the natural world, the inevitability of change, and the enduring potential for renewal.
