Xochi Art Gallery Presents Into Abstraction: Remaut. Opening the Year-Long Remaut Collection Program.
MANTEIGAS, PORTUGAL — Xochi Art Gallery is pleased to announce Into Abstraction: Remaut, the inaugural exhibition of The Remaut Collection, a comprehensive year-long program dedicated to the work of Belgian contemporary artist Roger Remaut. Opening on January 10, 2026, the exhibition marks the beginning of four rotating thematic presentations that explore key periods and concepts across more than five decades of Remaut’s artistic practice.
Into Abstraction focuses on Remaut’s early abstract works and his decisive departure from figuration. These formative pieces reveal the origins of a deeply personal visual language grounded in material exploration, surface, and process—concerns that continue to define his work today.
Now 83 years old, Roger Remaut remains an active and vital presence in contemporary art. His powerful, textured compositions investigate the poetry of material surfaces, the passage of time, and the transformation of memory into matter. Built from paint, pigment, and found materials, his works fuse abstraction with emotion, history, and tactile intensity.
Born in Ostend, Belgium, in 1942, Remaut studied at the Ostend and Westhoek Academies. His work has been widely exhibited throughout Europe and is included in major public collections, notably the Museum of Fine Arts in Ostend, as well as the Belgian and Flemish Government art collections.
Throughout 2026, Xochi Art Gallery will present three additional exhibitions as part of The Remaut Collection, each examining a distinct phase of Remaut’s evolving practice—from his early abstract beginnings to his mature mixed-media works. Together, the program offers an in-depth perspective on an artist whose vision continues to resonate across generations and borders.
The Remaut Collection underscores Xochi Art Gallery’s commitment to presenting artists of enduring significance and sustained creative relevance.
